Carol Dyhouse: Glamour
Thursday 15th July 7.30pm £7 (£5) SM
‘As soon as you think or write about glamour you enter dangerous territory. Are we talking about artificiality and the lure of false values? About gold-digging seducers or women on the make?’ Carol Dyhouse has written several books on women’s history and is author of the recently published Glamour: Women, History, Feminism (Zed Books, 2010), which looks at the changing meanings of the word glamour and its place in women’s lives. The book is based on extensive research into written sources, but equally draws on the history of film, costume, perfume and fur. Carol will be talking about the lives and reputations of two women, Elinor Glyn and Diana Dors and what they tell us about the history of glamour over the last century. Carol is currently research professor in history at the University of Sussex and she lives locally.
