Rose Collis Brighton Belles and other oddities
Saturday 10 July 2pm £7 (£5)
By Adam Jones
Rose Collis, acclaimed biographer (Coral Browne, k d lang, Nancy Spain) and social historian (Brighton Boozers: A History of the City’s Pub Culture) will serve up a taster menu of delights – personalities and places – from The New Encyclopaedia of Brighton, a substantially revised, rewritten and re-edited edition of Tim Carder’s long out-of-print original which includes over 150 new entries and scores of new illustrations from her own and other private collections. It seems that just about everyone who was anyone has had a connection to Brighton – from writer Charles Dickens to cabaret artiste Douglas Byng, playwrights Oscar Wilde and Joe Orton and Princess Diana, and Collis has an anecdote about them all.
