As the map below shows by 1853 much of the area had been built, althought the workhouse estate area had still not been built on. Note that at this stage Powis Square still had its original name of Powis Place and that 2 & 3 Powis Villas are incorrectly shown as being connected to Powis Place, when thay are detached houses. It also shows that at this time the top end of Church Street was called Centurion Place. The lower map from 1852 shows a wider view of Brighton and shows that the railway lines had been constructed.
