By Adam Jones

‘My heart goes out to meet him. I much question if there is in the world such another man for mind, intelligence, and manners.’ (Samuel Johnson). In 1773 Charles Burney (1726-1814), the English organist, teacher, composer and music historian, wrote his two- volume journal entitled The Present State of Music in Germany, the Netherlands and the United Provinces recounting his travels throughout these countries in the previous year. This concert of ‘words and music’ focuses on his travels in Germany in particular, taking in the great musical cities of Vienna and Hamburg. Extracts from these ‘travel diaries’ are placed alongside a selection of musical works written by some of the composers he met, or learned about during his travels, including piano music by CPE Bach, Gluck, Hasse, Haydn and Vanhall. Ambrose Page (piano) Patricia Hope (narrator).
