THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL (1957)
Saturday 16 July 4pm ST NICHOLAS CHURCH
By Adam Jones
Written by Terence Rattigan (adapted from his play, The Sleeping Prince, a pièce d’occasion, contrived for the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953), The Prince And The Showgirl stars Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier (who also directed). With a supporting cast of stalwart British actors, including Sybil Thorndike, Richard Wattis and Jeremy Spenser, the film is set during the Coronation of King George V in London in 1911 (coincidentally also the year of Rattigan’s birth) and tells of the improbable relationship which develops between the starchy Prince Regent of a fictitious Balkan country (Olivier) and a naïve American chorus girl (Monroe). With terrific production values, this soufflé of a film allows a rare opportunity to see Olivier in drolly comic performance. Talk and film together £10 (£8)
