Behind the Temple in this picture there's a spur of trees (and buildings?) running north-south. Does anybody know what this corresponds to in today's landscape? Is the southern end of this tree-line by any chance Saint Anne's Well? It's hard to accept that today's built-up landscape was once as open as this - and with such a monster of a building as the first incursion into the wide open spaces. The picture also shows just how much of a hill there is; the Royal Alex hospital was definitely built on the crown of a hill (as was the Victorians' habit).
