'The Temple' was the name given to the residence of Thomas Read Kemp erected in 1819. The original design is said to be influenced by the Temple of Solomon. However, as can be seen from the two photographs, the building has been extensively altered since becoming the Brighton and Hove High School for Girls.
It is interesting to note that, at the end of the Regency, the whole of this western part of the conservation area was undeveloped.
